Lesson 2

Objective
Names. An important element of this novel is the commentary on the nature and power of true names.
The objective of this lesson is to look at names.
Lesson
Write 15 minutes, review KWT
1. Class discussion. What's in a name? How do we use names to identify people? How do we feel when someone calls us by the wrong name? How important is our name to us? How many students like their names? What would it be like if we had no names but only numbers? What is the power in a name? What changes between two strangers once they exchange names?
2. Group work. In groups students will share what they might name their daughter and son and why they chose that name.
3. Homework. Students will research their own name, its meaning and origin and write a brief paper on that name, including famous people who have had the same name. Include in the paper another name the student would like to have been named, its meaning and why the student might prefer that name.
4. Class work. Discuss the power of a name and identifiers.
