Learning Goals
Students will find strength in their own literary voice, and will work on storytelling in order to share and relate personal narratives to one another. Students will also be able to identify and describe literary political and social allusions in a text. Students will have the ability to further reflect on stereotypes and limitations that are placed on fellow humans around the world through Valente’s own literary criticisms, focusing on the social issues within the United States.
Parent Involvement
Parent involvement is so important for this book! Students will be asked to read the essential questions raised (1-2) per week. They should ask parents for thoughts, and discuss, as we do in class. Ask parents to listen first, then ask questions. Have students share their creative writings. Set phone meetings with every parent-- call for positives.
